It sounds terrible to you. It’s nothing like what you listen to. It’s nothing like what you thought they’d listen to or be interested in. You think your kids’ music sucks.
You might not be wrong.
And yet you are definitely wrong.
There’s a touching scene in the short documentary “I Talked to 50 Dads at the Eras Tour” where a dad—who’s at the concert with his daughter—says, “I was never a Taylor Swift fan, but I saw [her] documentary and then I was sort of floored.” He explained he never wanted to be the dad that made fun of what his kids were interested in. “My parents were like, ‘Duran Duran’s the worst’ … so I worked hard to not be like that.”
Whether you think the music is good or not, whether you’re a fan yourself or not, as we’ve said, interest is interest when it comes to your kids. Take it. Be curious about it. Make an effort to like it yourself—or at least understand it. If they’re connecting with the music, or with anything else, that means it’s also helping them to feel things, to understand things about themselves they might not be able to express. It’s a window into their world.
So don’t judge. Listen. Get on their level and take a moment to get into it with them. Your interest will go far with your kids and it will give you another thing to connect over. Do not miss that opportunity.
