Look, we know our kids grow when we sign them up for things—when they do sports, when they take classes, when they volunteer for an event at school or in the community. It makes them have to figure stuff out on their own. It broadens their view of the world. It gets them out of their comfort zone. It gives them opportunities to learn new things and learn about themselves.
And that’s why we sign them up for all of this.
But what about us? How are we getting better as people, better as parents, better as someone who is a part of a community and a society? In the past year, other than tagging along to the stuff you signed them up for, how are you doing that? What have you signed yourself up for?
You can still grow. You can take classes, learn new languages, learn new skills. You can participate in sports. You can improve your knowledge, your health, and your wellbeing.
And yes, you do have the time.
“Let no one be slow to seek wisdom when they are young nor weary in the search thereof when they have grown old,” Epicurus said. “For no age is too early or too late for the health of the soul.”
