You’re tired. It’s been a long day or a long trip. It’s all the way across town. It’ll mean quite a detour on the way to your sister’s house. They haven’t mentioned it in a while. The tickets aren’t cheap.

There are a million reasons not to go: to pass on that children’s concert, to not stop at that roadside attraction, to not squeeze in the museum, to not go to the water park, to not take them to that store they love or that park with the ducks. But it’s worth asking, as you run through these excuses, how much longer will they want to do this? How long until the window closes?

Soon enough, as we’ve said, they’ll be too cool. Soon enough, they won’t get excited like this anymore. Soon enough, they’ll be too busy. Soon enough, they’ll move on…and eventually move out. Almost all of these interests are phases—in any case, the opportunities to connect over them like this is fleeting.

Now is the time. Now is the time.

Don’t let it go. Don’t pass up the chance. Even if it seems like a pain. Even if you don’t feel like doing it right now. You will regret not having done it with them while they were still interested.
