It’s a video game. It’s a YouTuber who makes unwatchable videos about video games. It’s drama at school. It’s an argument about politics you don’t agree with. It’s a TikTok dance their friends are doing. It’s a new boy band that sounds awful.
But you know what it also is? It’s interest. Your kids are interested in something and for some reason they’re interested in talking to you about it. Or watching something with you. Or they’re interested in going somewhere with you (even if at the end, they’ll ask you to buy them something).
So take it! This is what you say you want: To connect with them. To do stuff with them. To talk with them. To spend quality or “garbage time” together.
Don’t turn it away because it doesn’t match your taste. Or because you’re in a bad mood. Or because you’re tired. Or because you can “see where this is going.” Take the opportunity. Encourage the interest. Show them that you’re interested in what interests them.
None of us get enough of these chances—is there even such a thing as too many?—so take it when and where you can.
We talk about parenting topics like this in Daily Dad Society, our community designed for parents who want to be more present, more patient, and more prepared. Because being a parent isn’t just something you are. It’s something you do, every day.
As a member, you’ll gain access to our private discussion space to talk about fatherhood, ask questions, and share wins and struggles. You’ll also receive invitations to monthly calls with Ryan, as well as a book recommendation to discuss on the calls.
Being a father isn’t just biological—it’s philosophical. It’s a daily practice of presence, patience, example, and love. Daily Dad Society gives you the tools, structure, and community to live that practice—every single day.
Head over to dailydad.com/society to learn more and join us! We hope to see you there.
