They are going to take their time. That’s what they do. They take time to put on their shoes. They take their time to get out of the car. They take their time cleaning up their room—letting it get absolutely disgusting first. They take their time figuring out what they’re going to major in, what they’re going to do with their life.
This is what kids do. They take forever.
You can rush them. You can ride them. You can make them feel like absolute garbage about it.
Or, you know, you could just wait…
This is not easy to do. It will drive you insane. You will be late to stuff. They will miss opportunities. They will blame you for the situations they got themselves in. You will get yelled at by them…for the very thing you tried to tell them to do.
But this is all certainly better than the alternative, isn’t it? It’s going to take the same amount of time anyway–it’s going to take what it takes. Is there any reason to add nagging and criticism and lectures on top? Is there any reason to make them feel judged? To make them resent you?
There isn’t. So relax. Wait it out. Go along for the ride.
