Though Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius’ adopted father, never formally studied Stoicism, he embodied its principles perfectly. He led with quiet strength, remaining composed under pressure and putting others at ease with his presence.
In Meditations, Marcus credits Antoninus for teaching him essential virtues: getting the best from others, maintaining simplicity, and serving with compassion. To Marcus, his stepfather exemplified “strength, perseverance, self-control”—qualities that marked him as a natural Stoic.
Marcus spent his life trying to emulate Antoninus, whom he considered “the most beautiful model of a perfect life.” How wonderful! Isn’t that what we’re all striving for as parents?
Think of that naturally Stoic person in your own life, whether it’s a parental figure, a friend, a trusted colleague—the person who instinctively finds opportunity in obstacles and always chooses wisdom over reaction. Honor and emulate their example, and don’t forget to thank them.
