This Is All You Get

After every exhausting, interminable hour—after all those sleepless nights and terrible twos, and tantrums and long afternoons, suddenly it changes.

Suddenly you get your kids for forty-five minutes in the morning. You get them for the fifteen-minute drive from school to practice and then five minutes home. And then, what seems like a whole long evening is actually just an hour or two before bed. You get the weekends, sure, but you share them with soccer games and friends’ houses and birthday parties. Or you share them in a custody arrangement or you share them with a boarding school.

The point is: It doesn’t last long, this time when they are little. You get them all the time…and then suddenly this is all you get of them. And even this middle period is a way station until the time where you barely get to see them all—because they move out and on.

So be grateful for what you have, as exhausting as it is. Enjoy it while you have it. Don’t fritter it away. Don’t waste it. Because soon enough, it will be all but gone.

Tempus Fugit. Time flies. We say it all the time—and it’s worth repeating.

Make it a daily practice to ground yourself in the moment, to appreciate this fleeting time with your kids, to make the most of it.

The Tempus Fugit Medallion was created to support you in that practice. Add it to your everyday carry to remember that time flies, and that the most important people in your life need your attention and your presence.
