You’ve got a kid that won’t listen. You’ve got a marriage that’s falling apart. You’ve got a stressful job. You’ve got a kid who keeps getting in trouble at school. You’ve got a kid that you’re having trouble connecting with. You’ve got a neighbor you hate, bills past due, and in-laws correcting your every decision.
It’s tough to be you. Does anyone have it worse? Does anyone have it harder? Yeah. They do. There are people who have buried a child. It’s worth remembering that every day. There are people who have buried a child.
As Phoebe Bridgers sings in the song, “Funeral”
Wishin’ I was someone else, feelin’ sorry for myself
When I remembered someone’s kid is dead
When we’re having a tough time, when we’re overwhelmed, when we’re mad at the world, when we are starting to suspect that things just couldn’t get any worse, it’s worth remembering that. Because in the big scheme of things, we are actually quite fortunate. Most of our problems are quite small. We are not being picked on. We have not been singled out. We still have the things most important to us.
So take a deep breath. Look around. Remember what you have, not just what you lack. Because even in the chaos, even in the frustration, there is so much to be grateful for. And that gratitude? It’s what makes the hard days worth enduring. It’s what reminds us to keep going.
