We Need This as Much as Our Kids Do

Aristotle wrote his Nicomachean Ethics for his son, Nicomachus. Seneca was given a philosophy teacher by his father. Cato too received the philosophical education his parents believed a promising young man deserved. Marcus Aurelius, Rome’s philosopher-king, tried to pass on his wisdom to his son Commodus by surrounding him with the best philosophical minds—though we know that didn’t turn out as he hoped.

The point is: philosophy, in the ancient world, wasn’t reserved for grad school or removed from regular life. It was for everyone—parents, children, soldiers, merchants—people with day jobs and daily struggles. It was practical, lived, and essential to navigating the challenges of being human.

The great philosophers believed that the most valuable inheritance isn’t money or land, but a love of learning—a commitment to wisdom. That remains true today. In fact, it may be even more true now.

As parents, we need philosophy just as much as our kids do. Parenting demands the four Stoic virtues: courage (to do what’s hard), discipline (to follow through), justice (to do what’s right), and wisdom (to know what matters). It calls for clear thinking, emotional resilience, and the ability to stay steady under pressure—whether you’re navigating a tantrum at Target or a teenager pushing boundaries.

Would a mindset like that help you become a better parent? A better partner? Would it give you more peace, more clarity, and more time for what actually matters as a family?

And what would it mean for your kids to grow up with these tools? To understand responsibility. To handle adversity with composure. To think for themselves. To be strong, kind, and grounded.

If that resonates, our course Stoicism 101: Ancient Philosophy for Your Actual Life was built for you—and it’s a powerful way for families not just to learn about philosophy, but to practice it together.

Ryan Holiday—author of The Daily StoicDiscipline Is Destiny, and The Obstacle Is the Way—will be your instructor. He’s taught Stoicism in Super Bowl locker rooms, to special operations units, Fortune 500 companies, and millions of readers worldwide. Now he’ll be your personal guide inside Stoicism 101.

Whether you’re brand new to Stoicism or picking your study back up, Marcus Aurelius said it best: “There is no role so well suited to philosophy as the one you are in right now.” The role of a parent. The role of a spouse. The role of son or daughter. Whatever your role—you can bring wisdom to it.

Philosophy wasn’t meant to stay in books. It was meant to be lived—together.
