You\u2019ve seen their sweetness, their cuteness <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/it-has-always-been-like-this\/\">since the beginning<\/a>. You\u2019ve seen them try. You\u2019ve seen them feel shame when they\u2019ve messed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also know <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/its-so-hard\/\">how hard it is to be a person<\/a>, let alone a kid, in this world. Life is frustrating. Life is tough. It\u2019s full of temptations. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/you-cant-prevent-them-from-making-mistakes\/\">It\u2019s easy to make mistakes<\/a>. It\u2019s easy to get overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know all this, yet how often is it reflected in how you treat them? Or how you treat situations involving them\u2013the vase they broke, the lie they told, the test they failed, the punch they threw? As Dr. Becky writes in her amazing book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepaintedporch.com\/products\/good-inside-a-guide-to-becoming-the-parent-you-want-to-be?_pos=1&amp;_sid=2ad6a2e37&amp;_ss=r\">Good Inside<\/a><\/em> (a must read!), when we look at something our kids did or said, we should ask ourselves the question, \u201cWhat is my <em>most generous interpretation<\/em> of what just happened?\u201d When you ask this question, she says, you\u2019ll notice yourself softening, and your interactions will go better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/you-are-only-as-happy-as-your-unhappiest-child\/\">They\u2019re sad<\/a> that they didn\u2019t get included. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/theyre-probably-just-tired-of-this\/\">They\u2019re tired, as we\u2019ve talked about before<\/a>. Or <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/this-explains-everything\/\">they\u2019re hungry<\/a>. This is why they\u2019re acting the way they\u2019re acting. They were trying to be careful, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/do-you-really-think-they-did-that-on-purpose\/\">they were trying to do what you asked<\/a>\u2014but they\u2019re clumsy and easily distracted. They\u2019re just being a kid, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/theyre-not-just-playing-2\/\">they\u2019re trying to have fun<\/a>, and they don\u2019t yet fully understand the consequences of their actions. They\u2019re a teenager full of hormones making them crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approaching your kid\u2019s action with the <a href=\"https:\/\/scottbarrykaufman.com\/podcast\/becky-kennedy-good-parenting\/\">Most Generous Interpretation<\/a> doesn\u2019t mean you excuse everything, that you never hold them accountable for anything. It just means you give them the benefit of the doubt, you start from the place that you should be starting from\u2014which is that your kids are good inside, that they\u2019re doing the best they can, that life is hard for everyone\u2014and even harder when you\u2019re small.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You know your kids are good.
