Not of America, not of the body and soul, or the natural world, as he so expertly and often did in his poems. No, it was his father he was speaking of, but really a generation of fathers, in fact, a type of father that continues to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThe father, strong, self-sufficient, manly, mean, anger\u2019d, unjust; <\/em><br><br><em>The blow, the quick loud word, the tight bargain, the crafty lure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe that\u2019s your father. Maybe, maybe there\u2019s flashes of you in there too. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/they-already-doubt-themselves-enough\/\">\u200bIt\u2019s the father in Adam Hochschild\u2019s book\u200b<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/dLfYmDz\">\u200b<em>Half the Way Home<\/em>\u200b<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/the-most-important-decision-you-make\/\">\u200bIt\u2019s Springsteen\u2019s dad\u200b<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/they-deserve-to-know-before-its-too-late\/\">\u200bIt\u2019s Ted Williams\u200b<\/a>, as captured in Wright Thompson\u2019s incredible chapter in his amazing book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepaintedporch.com\/collections\/wright-thompsons-top-three\/products\/cost-of-these-dreams-sports-stories-and-other-serious-business\">\u200b<em>The Cost of These Dreams<\/em>\u200b<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydad.com\/heres-how-to-tie-your-family-together\/\">\u200bIt\u2019s Lincoln\u2019s father\u200b<\/a>. It\u2019s way too many people\u2019s fathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the kind of parent that haunts a child, that haunts them into adulthood. The one whose approval they never got, whose moods they feared, whose affection they still crave. It\u2019s the one that kids flee, move away from, who they don\u2019t want to come home to see for the holiday\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also the one you can\u2019t afford to be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In just a few words, Whitman was able to get the essence of it.
