You Are Rich (If You Can Do This. If You DO This.)

Not everyone can do it. Some people are paddling furiously just to stay afloat—working multiple jobs, fighting their way out of poverty or addiction or generational trauma. These parents are struggling mightily just to provide for their kids. As a result, they can’t make it to every practice. They can’t sit in that long pickup line after school. They can’t spend chunks of the summer—or the holidays—just doing family stuff.

But you?

You could…if you wanted. If you made this more of a priority.

You have the luxury and the power of making your own schedule. You can afford to delegate. You could pass on opportunities. No one would die if you were less reachable…although your ego might take a hit.

But you will have to be willing to pay that price, to exercise that power. You will have to decide that the kids are the center of your life—not conferences, not meetings, not being ‘in the room where it happens.’ And if you can do that, if you can make the decision to put your kids first, then you’ll understand what it is to be truly rich.

P.S. These types of parenting challenges affect us all, but it’s hard to find a solid group of fathers making space to talk about them. Who are comfortable speaking openly, sharing their struggles, and offering advice to others walking the same path.

Soon after my first son was born, I started looking for a support group like that—one where I could be honest and learn from others’ experiences.

I couldn’t find it, so I built it.

I wanted to create a community where dads like me wouldn’t feel judged for trying (and often first failing) at the challenges that being a parent inevitably throws at us. Where we could have the support of other dads along every step of this fatherhood journey, in an effort to get better at the most important job we’ll ever have.
