Maybe you can’t afford what some parents can. Maybe you don’t think it’s a good use of money. Maybe you waited too long and missed out. And it breaks your heart that you can’t give them everything they want.

But even with constraints, financial or otherwise, you can usually find some way to make it work.

We’ve been talking about a great documentary in which actor Paul Scheer interviews dads outside of a Taylor Swift concert. One family (without tickets) sits in a car, windows-open, listening to the show from the parking lot. The dad explains, “We can’t get in, so the next-best thing is to be out here enjoying the energy. This is as close as we can get, but we feel like we’re part of it.”

Isn’t that wonderful? Despite not being able to get into the show, they found a way for their daughter to enjoy the concert…and enjoyed it right along with her.

Look, you can always find a way if you try. And it’s going to be an important moment. Your kids are going to realize—maybe not right now, but certainly when they get older—that even though you may not have had the resources, the time, whatever it might have been, you made it happen for them in some form. And they enjoyed it anyway.

And maybe that experience (your version) was even better.
