It’s already been a long day. You’ve already done plenty. It’s a ridiculous request. It’s too much, too noisy, too embarrassing, too messy.
But you know what? Bluey’s dad would probably say yes. He’d agree to be the model or the target. He’d get down on his hands and knees and take the game seriously. He would jump in the water. He’d watch the stupid movie again. He’d do the voice some more. He’d go to the concert. He’d be the chauffeur.
And you know who else would say yes? The parent you want to be would say ‘yes.’ They would not make the excuse. They would not be too self-conscious, too exhausted, too frustrated. They would not turn down the opportunity. They would not push their kids away.
They would make the memory. They would relish the connection. They would play the game. They would get their hands or their clothes or their face dirty. Because this is what it’s about. These moments—when you’re engaging with your kids, showing interest in whatever they’re excited to include you in, laughing together, creating stories and memories—are everything you should be saying ‘yes’ to while you can.
