You’re Not Supposed to Be Enough

There will be days when you’re so frustrated, you lose your temper and say something you regret. Days when you’re so burnt out, you don’t know how to handle what is in front of you. Days when you’re spread so thin that nobody, not even your kid, is getting the best version of you.

At the root of it, it’s always the same thing.

During a disagreement with his wife, author Kurt Vonnegut—who had always envied his wife’s large, close-knit family—realized that they were expecting something impossible from each other. “When a couple has an argument,” he said, “they may think it’s about money or power or sex, or how to raise the kids, or whatever. What they’re really saying to each other, though, without realizing it, is this: ‘You are not enough people!’”

How did parents in the past do it? They did it together—as an extended family, as a village. They didn’t wall themselves off from each other like we do. They didn’t expect one or two people to do the job of dozens of people.

It’s probably for the best that most of us don’t live in villages anymore, but there are consequences to this development—one that every modern parent feels acutely on a daily basis. Even more so if you’ve moved away from home for a job, a partner, or have some kind of remote or hybrid profession. We are fortunate to have such opportunity and freedom. But this has not been without its costs or stresses.

We are not meant to parent alone. We are not enough people to possibly handle this responsibility alone.

That’s why Daily Dad wanted to create a place for parents to come together and rediscover that level of support network. A community where we could share the wins and the hard days. Swap book recommendations and hard-won wisdom. And remind each other to slow down and actually be with our kids.

That’s what Daily Dad Society is built for. It’s a community of dads supporting each other and learning—together—how to get better at their most important job.

Daily Dad Society puts the parenting tools, structure, accountability, and resources you need within reach. There’s the support of other dads who have been through the stage you’re in right now. Who have some things figured out based on experience. There’s science, there’s psychology, there’s the work of childhood development experts—resources we read and discuss together—and all of this is more accessible to us now than it was for any generation before.

We can learn to do better, one day at a time, once piece of research at a time, one piece of advice at a time. It’s there for us if we just reach for it. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Daily Dad Society members meet monthly for a live call with Ryan Holiday to discuss parenting challenges—and to become more present, patient, and intentional dads.

Here’s what dads in the group are saying:

“Through [Ryan’s] books and podcasts and communities like this, it feels like it’s almost a daily kind of checks and balances I have going on within me… I can find myself very slowly but subtly finding these changes within me, and my kids are noticing these changes in me and my wife is.” — Karthik S.

“I just feel like this is a great resource, especially for me going into this and not having any f**king idea what I’m doing.” — Tyler W., Expecting dad

“Having a network of guys that you can talk to is super valuable, and that’s why I applaud your efforts of putting this together.” — James W., Dad of 3

“The only things that have really impacted me [as a father], which is why I still do it, is the Daily Stoic, the Daily Dad, and now this group as well.” — Jordan F., Dad of 2
